Hollowmere Expedition: reading the valley for clues
Hollowmere Expedition rarely tells you what to do directly, which is part of its charm and occasionally its frustration. But after finishing it, I realized nearly every puzzle solution is seeded in the environment if you slow down.
Read every note and listen to every ambient conversation fully. I skipped a bit of dialogue near the mill and spent twenty minutes stuck on a lock combination that had been spoken aloud two scenes earlier.
When you're stuck, stop clicking randomly and instead ask what the game has recently shown you. The design is fair — a solution is never more than a scene or two away from the clue.
Play it in one or two sittings if you can. The atmosphere builds, and picking it up cold after a week means losing the thread of half those subtle clues.
